The Shaftesbury's Olympics Team

The old  Newton and Wright building on the corner of Fairbridge and Hornsey Road started off as a 'Jubilee Hall' with a coffee tavern on the ground floor and space for dances and concerts on the upper floors.

In 1890 some sixteen year olds met there and started a running club. Coffee Taverns were temperance places, but the teenagers took their name from the local pub:

The Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers are still going (they added the 'Barnet' after merging with Barnet Copthall Ladies in 1986). They've sent athletes to every olympics since 1972 and 38 went to this year's Olympic trials
