The old
Newton and Wright building on the corner of Fairbridge and Hornsey Road started off as a 'Jubilee Hall' with a coffee tavern on the ground floor and space for dances and concerts on the upper floors.

In 1890 some sixteen year olds met there and started a running club. Coffee Taverns were temperance places, but the teenagers took their name from the local pub:

The
Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers are still going (they added the 'Barnet' after mergin
g with Barnet Copthall Ladies in 1986). They've sent athletes to every olympics since 1972 and 38 went to this year's Olympic trials.
